Help for energy businesses to bring new technology to market — 11 August 2022
Australia’s success in transitioning to a more renewable energy generation and storage model will be influenced by how quickly new technology and innovation will be able to enter the market.
The Australian Energy Regulator (AER), along with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC), the Essential Services Commission of Victoria (ESC), and the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), are pleased to announce the launch of a joint initiative designed to foster energy innovation and reduce barriers to market entry: the Energy Innovation Toolkit.
The Energy Innovation Toolkit comprises an interactive website that provides information on the regulatory regime to energy innovators and aims to reduce barriers for new energy business models. Our website is supported by an Innovation Enquiry Service and secure data lodgement portal that will enable innovators to contact the Energy Innovation Toolkit with specific regulatory enquiries.
New energy laws expected later in the year will help broaden the online service to allow the granting of temporary waivers and trials requiring regulatory relief from national energy legislation. The ESC already has powers to waive certain Victorian regulatory requirements to enable businesses to trial innovative new products and services for a time-limited period through the Energy Innovation Toolkit.
