All Reporting Success stories Updates 14 Mar 2024 Unlocking CER Benefits Rule Change Draft Determination - Update A new draft determination from the AEMC proposes to introduce two new meter types and new provisions for the establishment of additional settlement points behind NEM connection points for small and large customers. Under the proposed rule change, large customers would be able to choose multiple energy service providers for their premises. Updates 23 Feb 2024 Very Fast FCAS Update Two new frequency control ancillary service markets have been introduced into the National Electricity Market The National Electricity Market (NEM) spans Australia’s eastern and south-eastern coasts and comprises of five interconnected states that also act as price regions: Queensland, New South Wales (including the Australian Capital Territory), South Australia, Victoria, and Tasmania. Western Australia and the Northern Territory are not connected to the NEM, primarily due to the distance between networks. The NEM’s transmission network carries power from electricity generators to large industrial energy users and local electricity distributors across the five regions. These assets are owned and operated by state governments, or private businesses. . Updates 11 Oct 2023 First trial waiver granted to Endeavour Energy! - 11 October 2023 The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) has granted its first trial waiver through the Energy Innovation Toolkit to upgrade around 5,600 smart meters in parts of Greater Western Sydney, the Blue Mountains, the Southern Highlands and the Illawarra region of NSW. Endeavour Energy has been granted the waiver to implement a trial that is expected to improve the delivery of load management services that reduce electricity consumption at peak periods and lower electricity network costs for consumers. The trial should also enable trial participants to access new and innovative energy services. Updates 27 Jun 2023 Submissions close on Endeavour Energy trial waiver consultation - 27 June 2023 On 9 May 2023 the AER published a consultation notice seeking views on the Energy Innovation Toolkit's first trial waiver The Regulatory Sandboxing trial waiver function allows the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) to grant a time limited trial waiver for eligible trial projects, exempting an innovator from having to comply with specified rules for a period of time to allow a trial to proceed. The Victorian Regulatory Sandboxing trial waiver function allows Essential Services Commission (ESC) to issue trial waivers providing time limited relief from Victorian energy frameworks. Updates 07 Jun 2023 Addendum to Endeavour Energy trial waiver application and extension of consultation period – 09 June 2023 The Australian Energy Regulator The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) regulates electricity networks and covered gas pipelines in all jurisdictions except Western Australia. The AER sets the amount of revenue that network businesses can recover from customers for using these networks. The AER also enforces the laws for the National Electricity Market (NEM) and spot gas markets in southern and eastern Australia, as well as monitoring and reporting on the conduct of market participants and the effectiveness of competition. (AER) has received additional information from Endeavour Energy further to questions posed as part of our consultation process. The AEMC makes and amends the National Electricity Rules (NER), the National Gas Rules (NGR), and the National Energy Retail Rules (NERR), and manages the rule change process. The AEMC does this in accordance with the national energy objectives, the central focus of which is the long-term interests of consumers. They also provide market development advice to governments.
